Skyping during class with Aviva and two of her second grade students was a great experience. The children seemed very sweet and were not shy about sharing their affinity to using technology in the classroom.
One of the issues that was brought up in our conversation was how children are able to use the technology at home. Aviva described how all of the children in her class have access to some sort of technology. The devices the children own include, but are not limited to, computers, tablets, and smartphones. Aviva told us how many of the parents in her class are eager to be involved. Most commonly, parents read what their children have written on the classroom blog. The children also go online at home post comments on classmates postings.
The video 'Technology Provides Parents a Window on the Classroom by Linking Home to School' shows a parent whose child is doing online journaling at school. The parent can access and read the child's entries, as well as other upcoming assignments on the website. In this case, the parent is even e-mailed every time a new grade is posted.
How have you seen parent communication via the internet used?
I enjoyed chatting with Aviva and her two students. They were very sweet and didn't hesitate to share their feelings on technology. Its great how these students have the resources at home to continue to use and expand on how they use technolgy to show parents what they are doing in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to hear from a well versed teacher on how she implements technology in her grade 1/2 class. I've heard a lot of teachers speak about use in upper grades but it was nice to hear from a Primary School teacher. What I later learned is that many of the technology tools she has in her class was bought by her!!! She told me that even though her school in in a wealthy part of Canada, the schools technology budget is small. I usually spend about $500 a year on supplies, prizes, and various tools. When I switched grades I spent more because I needed different manipulatives.
ReplyDeleteAnne Marie,
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad you shared that video. I think it's great how the use and incorporating technology allows parents access. This is another great way for parents to see what is going on in the classroom and what their children are doing!
I also enjoyed Skyping with Aviva and with her students. It was great listening to her students and their experiences with different means of technology!
